So I was thinking about this issue some more while stuck in traffic. I think this is due to the rise of LED taillights. With regular bulbs, the lens shape was determined by the need to project light from the bulb. And if you look at some older models (like this 2006 Civic coupe), you see that they were already going to a C shape, but the light didn’t actually project that way:

So now we’ve reached the point that designers can make that C shape a reality. Combine that with the current trend of over styling everything and turning it up to 11, and we get this:
